AFTER PURCHASE

Which remedy should you open now?

The seller, timing and problem change the order of action. This is general guidance for a purchase connected to France, not legal advice.

    Freeze the evidence

Capture the listing, profile, messages, payment, tracking, packaging and opening condition. Keep original files and a dated timeline.

Redact personal data and the complete serial before sharing anything.Ministère de l’ÉconomieOpen official route
  2. 02Now
    Send the withdrawal notice

If the distance purchase was made from a professional and the window is still open, send an explicit withdrawal statement now and retain proof of sending.

Simply returning or refusing the parcel is not enough. The usual statutory period is 14 days from the day after receipt, subject to exceptions.Service-PublicOpen official route
  3. 03Next step
    Make a written professional-seller claim

Describe the exact gap between the listing and the item, attach useful evidence and state the remedy sought. New and used goods sold by a professional fall under the legal conformity guarantee.

This guarantee covers consumer-to-professional contracts; it does not apply in the same way to peer-to-peer sales.Service-PublicOpen official route

    Report the professional

If the written complaint fails, use SignalConso, then the mediator named in the professional seller’s terms.

SignalConso supports reporting and an amicable resolution; it does not determine whether the item is authentic.DGCCRF · SignalConsoOpen official route

    Check cross-border support

If you live in France and the professional is established in another EU country, Iceland or Norway, check the free European Consumer Centre service.

    Report fraudulent online content

For a site, account or online content clearly offering counterfeits or a scam, preserve the URLs and use PHAROS.

01

Start with the seller

Authentication starts before the item. Check the business identity, address, legal notices, return terms, protected payment and the account’s real history. Artificial urgency, an implausible price and refusal to provide precise photos matter more than a beautiful box.

Key points✦ Provenance✦ Invoice✦ Construction✦ Expert review
02

Provenance before serial numbers

Ask when, where and by whom the item was bought, then look for a coherent timeline across invoice, model, materials and condition. Numbers, cards and packaging are copied too. One document never replaces a coherent body of evidence.

03

Inspect construction

Inspect symmetry, alignment, leather cutting, stitch tension, edges, hardware and closures. Compare only with the same reference, period and material because legitimate details change. One imperfection is not automatically a fake, but several inconsistencies mean the purchase should stop.

04

When to use an expert

For a high-value, rare or peer-to-peer purchase, seek independent authentication before the return window closes. Check what the certificate covers, professional insurance and the error process. A photo-based app can help with screening but cannot guarantee authenticity on its own.

05

If the item is counterfeit

Do not use the item. Preserve the listing, messages, payment, photos and report. Request a written refund, open a dispute with the platform or payment provider and report the seller. In France, counterfeit goods may also pose safety risks and can be seized by customs.

06

Hermès, Chanel, Dior and Vuitton: no magic tell

A house may change markings, chips, lining, suppliers, engravings or construction details by reference and period. A copied code can look correct on a fake, while a small variation may be legitimate on an authentic item. First identify model, size, material and season, then compare proportions, construction and provenance as a whole.

07

What houses can actually confirm

The authorised network is the safest route for a new purchase. For resale, do not assume a boutique will issue a certificate: Goyard explicitly says it offers no authentication, while Hermès, Dior and Louis Vuitton chiefly describe care or repair routes. Ask before travelling whether the house can inspect the reference, retrieve a purchase or accept a service, and never turn a commercial response into a certificate.

08

Photo, video and physical inspection

Request a full view followed by sharp macros of corners, edges, stitches, clasp, zip, screws, engravings, interior and markings. A short video should show the clasp opening and closing, the zip moving and the item holding its shape without cuts. For a high-value purchase, this media prepares the physical inspection; it does not replace it.
