France is back on winter time: check your clocks

Mainland France turned its clocks back this Sunday, 25 October: 03:00 became 02:00. Paris is now on UTC+1. Check manual alarms, international meetings and the local times on your tickets.

01

Paris is now on UTC+1

Mainland France turned its clocks back on Sunday 25 October 2026: 03:00 became 02:00. Paris and Corsica are now on winter time, UTC+1. We rechecked the date and time on 25 October against Service Public and the City of Paris. Check your alarm, watch and manually set appliances; do not turn a phone back again if it has already updated. For an overseas territory, use its own time zone rather than applying the mainland rule.

02

Why 02:30 can refer to two different instants

Turning clocks back repeats the hour between 02:00 and 03:00. In the calculated examples below, 02:30 occurs first at UTC+02:00, then at UTC+01:00. For an appointment that night, include the date and offset or request an invitation carrying a time zone. “Sunday at 02:30” alone can be ambiguous. This is a repeated wall-clock label, not two different time changes or an instruction to alter the appointment twice.

03

Paris and Istanbul: the gap grows from one to two hours

IANA time-zone rules keep Istanbul at UTC+03:00 while Paris returns from UTC+02:00 to UTC+01:00. Istanbul is therefore one hour ahead before this change and two afterwards. The table calculates four UTC instants for explanation; none is an actual service departure. For a call, store Europe/Paris and Europe/Istanbul in the calendar rather than copying a fixed difference without a date. A city name and date are more reliable than “French time” alone.

04

Travel: do not independently shift a confirmed itinerary

Our practical recommendation is to reread the ticket, date, station or airport and messages from the operator. Do not independently shift a displayed departure because the clocks change. For an overnight connection or ambiguous time, ask the operator and retain the confirmation. An old screenshot is not a substitute for updated service information. The table on this page is not a connection calculator and does not establish that a particular train or flight will operate.

05

Automatic phone and manual alarm: check separately

A device can update automatically when its settings, software and required services allow; that is not guaranteed for every phone. Check its displayed zone and automatic-time option in the manufacturer’s guidance. Separately review watches, alarms, cars and other manually set devices. For an important departure, compare with a reliable time reference after the change rather than setting two alarms based on the same mistaken clock. Automatic configuration still deserves a quick check.

06

Ending seasonal changes is not an enacted rule

The European Commission distinguishes the proposal to end changes from the law in force. It says Council and Parliament must agree and that the Council has not finalised its position. Parliamentary support for ending changes in 2021 did not abolish the 2026 change. When reading a new announcement, check the adopted decision, commencement and territory rather than treating an old proposed deadline as a current rule or forecasting when abolition will happen.
