A map, not one ranking
French science combines national bodies, universities, grandes écoles, teaching hospitals, infrastructure and companies. CNRS, CEA, Inria, Inserm and CNES have different missions; start with field, level and job type.
Eight gateways
1. CNRS (France) — multidisciplinary fundamental research 2. CEA (Saclay et Grenoble) — energy, digital, health 3. Inria (France) — computing and AI 4. Inserm (France) — health and biomedicine 5. CNES (Toulouse et Paris) — space and satellites 6. Institut Pasteur (Paris) — microbiology and global health 7. Paris-Saclay (Île-de-France) — universities, schools and labs 8. GIANT Grenoble (Grenoble) — micro-nano, energy, photonics

AI, computing and quantum
Paris-Saclay, IP Paris, PSL, Sorbonne, Grenoble and Inria connect mathematics, software, data, robotics, cybersecurity and quantum. Check modules, maths prerequisites, internships and actual lab access.
Aerospace
Toulouse combines CNES, industry and education; Île-de-France and Bordeaux complete the chain. Embedded systems, materials and observation require different skills. Check CTI accreditation for the French engineering title.
Health, biotech and environment
Inserm, Institut Pasteur, universities and teaching hospitals structure biomedicine; climate, ocean, agriculture and biodiversity use other networks. Judge a master by teams, platforms, data, fieldwork and outcomes.
Energy and micro-nano
Saclay and Grenoble concentrate energy, materials, semiconductors and photonics. Inspect cleanrooms, platforms, industry partners and internship location. A national brand does not guarantee identical facilities on every campus.
International student route
Bachelor, master, engineering and PhD routes differ. Use the Campus France catalogue, then the degree page; verify language, prior degree, equivalency, fees, finance and possible security restrictions.
From degree to first role
Compare apprenticeships, internship agreements, working language, doctoral networks and partners. In research, lab and supervisor matter as much as institution; in industry, test real local vacancies and post-study work rules.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I study technology in France?
Paris-Saclay and Grenoble are major hubs, while Toulouse leads aerospace. Choice depends on field, degree, lab and accreditation.
How do CNRS, CEA and Inria differ?
CNRS is multidisciplinary, CEA covers areas including energy and technology, and Inria focuses on digital science.
