Understand the value chain before searching for an artist
French music connects songwriters and composers, performers, record producers, publishers, distributors, platforms, concert promoters, venues and festivals. A recorded track, a live show and the underlying work do not generate the same contracts or rights. To understand a project, first identify who writes, performs and finances the recording, who promotes the show and who controls each form of exploitation.
Chanson, rap, electronic music and other scenes
Chanson remains an important heritage, but it does not describe contemporary listening on its own. Rap is central to current consumption and charts, while pop, rock, electronic music, jazz, metal, traditional and world music operate through distinct but overlapping circuits. Compare programming, audiences, regional presence and economics instead of turning one genre, platform or generation into a definitive ranking of French music.

The 100 SMAC venues and the regional network
France’s Culture Ministry lists 100 labelled Scènes de musiques actuelles across metropolitan and overseas France, in both urban and rural areas. Together they present more than 6,000 events and give a stage to over 12,000 artists or groups each season. A SMAC is more than a concert hall: it may provide rehearsal space, residencies, training, advice, production, presentation and local cultural programmes. Its official calendar is a strong regional starting point.
Classical music, opera, orchestras and sound heritage
The classical ecosystem includes national and regional opera houses, permanent orchestras, independent ensembles, conservatoires, auditoriums, festivals and museums. The Philharmonie de Paris combines concerts, a media library, learning programmes and the Musée de la musique, whose collections contain more than 8,000 instruments and art objects. Before booking, distinguish the season, production, cast, exact hall, surtitles, seat visibility and the date on which sales open.
Festivals and venues are complementary economies
A regional CNM analysis published on 3 March 2026 and updated on 20 March counted 1,358 paid festivals in 2024: 11% of paid performances, 23% of attendance and 20% of national ticket revenue. The 3,367 non-festival venues accounted for 89% of performances, 77% of audiences and 80% of revenue. Brittany, Occitanie, Île-de-France and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur have sharply different festival and venue profiles.
Listen, read charts and verify a success claim
Streaming, physical sales, downloads, radio, video and concerts measure different behaviour. To verify a performance, record the French territory, reporting period, format, source and method: a weekly chart, cumulative certification and share of listening are not interchangeable. SNEP documents the recorded market and certifications; CNM studies also cover diversity, live music, employment, festivals, exports and artificial intelligence. Dated primary data is stronger than a viral screenshot.
Buy concert tickets without falling for a scam
Start with the artist, venue or festival’s official website and follow its named ticket seller. Check date, city, hall, seating, doors and show times, age limits, accessibility, bag rules and late transport. For resale, use only the officially authorised exchange and reject transfers, screenshots or implausible prices. Keep the listing, messages and payment record; Service-Public explains the reporting routes for fraud, including THESEE where applicable.
Work, produce and finance a music project
Separate creation, recording, publishing, touring, residency, presentation, export and equipment before looking for money. CNM programmes cover areas including phonographic production, publishing, independent record shops, live performance and international development, but each has its own applicant, affiliation, calendar, eligible costs and documents. Also verify authors’ rights, neighbouring rights, contracts and social declarations; Guso simplifies some duties for occasional live-entertainment employers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a SMAC?
A Scène de musiques actuelles is a state-labelled organisation combining concerts, support for creation and musical practice, and cultural work in its area.
Where can a French chart or music certification be checked?
Use SNEP for the recorded market, charts and certifications, then verify the reporting period, format and method.
How can an official concert ticket seller be recognised?
Start on the artist, venue or festival website and follow only the ticketing or exchange link it names.
Does CNM fund every artist directly?
No. Its programmes target different professions and projects, each with specific affiliation, eligibility, cost and timing rules.
Is the French music scene concentrated entirely in Paris?
No. The 100 SMAC organisations and regional live-music data show a national network across cities, rural areas and overseas France.
